About the Collection
Since its beginnings in 1899 as a "Normal school," there has been a student newspaper at Western. From Normal Messenger to Northwest Viking to WWCollegian to Western Front (and other title variants in between), the student paper has chronicled the social, athletic, academic, and creative life of the institution throughout its trajectory from teacher-training college to comprehensive regional university.

At present, there is no mechanism, such as an index, for systematically accessing this valuable historical resource. WWU Libraries Special Collections seeks to digitize its complete student newspaper collection in order to provide online access to researchers wherever they may be. The digital file will be searchable by names, topics, dates, and keywords, enabling users to discover with ease information that currently can be found only by hours of painstaking searching through volumes located exclusively in our research collection.

We've created this demonstration collection to illustrate our goal. It contains sample issues published over the years, digitized in three ways from either the original paper copies or microfilm of these copies. We value your responses to this proposal and to this test. Please contact us at:
