tytduwu THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 1985 WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, BELLINGHAM, WA VOL. 77, NO. 35 JULIE STEELE Little Jimmy McMullen, 2%, with his plastic guitar, croons toons with the elder members of the Skagit Blue-grass and Country Music Association at the Bellingham International Air Show Saturday. More than 4,000 airplane enthusiasts came to the show. Faculty discusses the word By Liisa Hannus This summer, six members of Western's faculty have gotten together to present "The Word: Printed, Seen and Heard," the title of the 1985 summer session lecture series. Open to the public, these educators will present lectures exploring several provocative topics on communication. The first of the lectures, "Lit-tera Scripta Manet: A History of Foreign Language and Exotic Types," is based around a series LECTURE SERIES of books written by Elsi Vasdall- Ellis of the technology department. Vassdal-Ellis, the interim director of the visual communication program, published the first volume of the series, a history of type, last year. She established EVE Press when she was unable to find someone who would print the limited edition. That volume will be on exhibit in September in Paris, France, as part of the "Typo-Graphism" exhibition conducted by the Centre de Creation Industrielle. The second volume, which is the topic of the lecture, will hopefully be published in December, Vasdall-Ellis said. It, like the first volume, will be a limited edition of 100 copies. The Smithsonian, Hunt Library at Carnegie- Mellon University and the Cary Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology all have a copy of the first volume. There is also one in Wilson Library. The third and final volume will •deal with miscellaneous characters, ranging from punctuation to musical notation to map symbols. It will be published sometime in the future. All lectures are at 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, in Miller Hall 104, beginning next week with "Lit-tera Scripta Manet" (which means, "the written word remains"). The second lecture will be "The Electrification of Johann Gutenberg," by Mel Davidson of the computer center.
