"People were calling in to make appointments; they wanted to give blood on Halloween," said Jeanne Mitchell, who coordinated the fall blood drive for the Puget Sound Blood Bank. The drive, which took place Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, had totals of 549 people who actually gave blood. The total for fall quarter of 1984 was 682. Mitchell described fall quarter as the drive the usually receives the highest turnout. Mitchell gave several possible reasons for the decline in donors. "The kids (students that help with the drive) thought maybe Halloween had something to do with it—all the parties." She also wondered if midterms might have kept students occupied. "I'd like to see how many (units) they could draw if the beds were full all the time," she said. Donors were steady the first day, but Mitchell said the donors "didn't have to wait around." Mitchell^said she prefers to get the students through as fast as possible, and she was glad they weren't kept waiting. More staff and possibly more faculty came to the drive this year, Mitchell said. Workers from the Puget Sound Blood Bank, who sponsor the drive and collect the blood, said they enjoy coming to Western.
