Wedekn W<tiUi4Ufto4>i COLLEGIAN Vol. XIVII — No. 11 Western Washington College, Bellingham, Washington Dec. 12, 1952 Music Concert To be Given WWC's annual Christmas concert, presented by the Music department, will be given in the college auditorium Monday, December 15, at 8 p. m. Directed by Bernard Regier, the college choir is composed of 100 voices. Among the selections to be presented are the following: "The Brazilian Psalm" by Jean Berger, "Sanctus" by Charles Gounod, "Thou Must Leave Thy Lowly Dwelling" by Hector Berliz. Wilbur Sheridan, organist, will accompany the choir. Featured on the program are the Vocollegians,. the college quartet, and three soloists: Jean Rogers, contralto; Robert Young, baritone; and Shirley Martin, soprano. The string orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Prank D'Andrea, will present Corelli's Christmas concert. STUDENTS WANTED! I want students who are interested in student government, especially here at Western, to meet in the Student center on Monday, December 15, at 12:30 p. m., to question school government. Exam Schedule Listed Notice: Schedule for final exams! 1. 10 o'clock classes and all classes meeting once or twice weekly hold examinations in last scheduled class period. 2. Thursday, December 18: 9 o'clock classes at 8 a. m. 11 o'clock classes at 10 a. m. 1 o'clock classes at 1 p. m. All library 101 sections at 3 p. m. 3. Friday, December 19: 8 o'clock classes at 8 a. m. g 2 o'clock classes at 1 p. m. 3 o'clock classes at 10 a. m. Final grades are due in the Registrar's' office Saturday noon, December 20. Dancing Group Will Appear Monday Modern dance group advised by Miss Pat Hieber, women's PE department, will appear in the Christmas music program presented the evening of December 15 at 8 p. m. One of the dances will be with the Vocollegians and the other will be with the choir. Dancers appearing will be: Marie Benjamin, Lor-rene Bergmann, Julia Chandler, Sue Fisher, Anita Joergenson, Maxine King, Donna McLane, Rita Rule and Carole Stevens. The group appeared in the Christmas program last year and hopes the combination will remain tin annual event. Results of Faculty Poll Given "Do you generally buy the Klipsun?" was the first question asked by Neill Mullen for the' Board of Control's 'poll on activities tickets for faculty. Out of the total number of faculty, 28 answered the anonymous poll, and the findings were presented at the Wednesday Board meeting. ' . . . - .» Most faculty members answering the poll did not buy the annual.,All except one read the Collegian, and that one stated he usually forgot to pick one up. One other said he read it and thought it was terrible. Out of all the artist and lecture assemblies this quarter, ,17 attended Ed Weeks, 16 attended the Opera Theater, 12 attended Richard Harrison, 11 heard Blair Bolles, nine went to hear Helen George, eight heard Greta Menzel, and seven heard Toni and Rosi Grunschlag. Out of the 11 basketball home games this season, a few attended or will attend five, and most two or three. All used the Co-op, some a lot, some little. In the number of drama presentations attended, the number ranged from all to none, with one comment being that the writer did not like non-professional acting. " Mark Hardie, ASB president, divided the Board into three buzz groups to pull the suggestions together, and the final decision was to turn the matter of faculty activities ticket over to the original committee for recommendations to the Board. Coach Lappenbusch turned in the list of football players meeting the award requirements in the constitution, and 24 athletes were voted to receive awards. Two other cases were also awarded letters according to Article 8, Section A of the By-Laws. Five additional letter winners chose to receive their awards in a different sport. Hardie was asked to approach the AWS president on the light j wiring and decorations of the Christmas tree on the main landing. $6246 of the Student Union fund was invested by Hardie with the First Federal Savings and Loan Wednesday ; afternoon, and the money began collecting/interest as of that date!, Hardie statejd that he planned to form a Student Union board at the first of the year to handle further material on t he fund. VIOLIN VIRTUOSO—Ruggiero Ricci, widely acclaimed young violinist, will present the second program ni the 1952-53 Bellingham Civic Music association series tonight at 8:15 p. m. in the Bellingham high school auditorium. Meeting Held Dinner meeting will be held tonight at 6 p. m. at Snider House for civic, press and radio leaders. The gathering, called by Doctor W. W. Haggard, College president, will discuss college recruitment. Guests include: Gerald Gannon, manager of Bellingham Chamber of Commerce; Ben Sefrit, city editor of the Bellingham Herald;,Sol Lewis, editor of Lynden Tribune; Jim Ham-street, city manager of KPUG; and Jack Clark, manager of KVOS. Western faculty who will attend are: Dr. Haggard, Dr. Merle Kuder, director of student pei'sonnel; Frank Punches, public relations; and Mrs. Ruth Burnet, coordinator of public information. Concert to Feature American Violinist Ruggiero Ricci, American violinist, will give a recital at the Bellingham high school auditorium tonight at 8:15 p. m. This is the second concert in the 1952-53 series of the Bellingham Civic Music association. Free tickets are available to WWC students at the business office at presentation of the ASB activity card. £• Ricci was born in San Francisco in 1920. He began music lessons when only five and was shortly under the guidance of the famous Louis Persinger. Ricci was acclaimed by critics as an important virtuoso at the age of nine after he appeared in concerts in most of the main cities of the nation. His first Carnegie hall recital was in 1930 and was praised by New York music critics. He made extensive tours in Europe and Latin America from 1934 until the outbreak of the war. During the war, Ricci served in the Army Air force. When he was released he once again returned to New York and gave a brilliant performance with such skill and superb musicianship that the New York Times acclaimed him "as fine a violinist as there is today." Since then he has appeared in cities from coast to coast and Latin America. He also makes radio and television appearances and is firmly established as "one of the outstanding violinists of the day." Winter Quarter Play Chosen "Two Blind Mice," a comedy and satire on the ways of government, has. been selected as the winter quarter college production. The play, directed by Lawrence Brewster, will be presented February 12, 13, and 14. Tryouts will be/held immediately after Christmas vacation. Fourteen men and four women will be in the cast. "I am especially looking for girls to play the parts of two elderly ladies—excellent comedy parts— and a man to play a live-wire newspaper reporter who causes all the confusion," stated Mr. Brewster^ He added, "The parts are many and varied, so I urge all students who are at all interested, to watch for further notices." Any student is eligible to turn out if he can meet the following requirements. He must, have a two point grade average for fall quarter, and have at least three days a week with the hours of three to five free for practice. Cantata Presented "The Night Before Christmas" will be one of the numbers featured at Bellingham high school's annual Christmas cantata. The orchestra and two choruses will present the-musical production Wednesday, December 17, at 8 p.m. Among the many outstanding numbers to be heard are: "Advent Motet" by Schreck, "And the Glory of the Lord," "Hallelujah Chorus," from: Handel's Messiah. The high school stage crew will present the tableau. Musical director is John Monroe; stage crew adviser, Margaret Gray. There will be a special presentation for students of Bellingham high school Friday morning, December 10. LIBRARY BOOKS DUE NOTICE:.all books in general circulation must be returned to the library by 9:30 p. m., Wednesday, December 17. Books charged for the quarter are due at 9:30 p. m., Thursday, December 18. A $1.00 clearance fee will be charged for books not returned at these times. List prices will be charged for all books not- returned Friday; December 19. Grades will be withheld until all accounts are cleared. Several Recordings Played by Amans Sgt. George Amans of the Washington State Patrol presented several of the recordings from his program "Could This Be You'-" in the AM building Wednesday, December 10, at 10 a. m. The recordings were made of violators picked up on the highways. All those used consisted of persons charged with drunken driving although it comes fifth or sixth on the list of accident causes. "Could This Be You" was originated five years ago by Sgt. Amans, Its specific purpose is to educate the public as to what it can expect when it gets out on the public highways. Sgt.
