Of these fifteen, students may vote for as many as three. The fifth position on the board is that of 2- quarter woman. The eleven candidates in this race are: Yvonne Carson, Bev Cate, Carol Irwin, Grace Johnson, Ruby Johnson, Helen Miller, Marilyn Morrison, Grace Norton, Barbara Shields, Joanne Wold, and Evelyn Wulff. Election chairman Loren Rankin h a s announced that the polls will be open from 9:00 till 4:00 on the election days. Mercury Halts Construction For Six Weeks Construction work on the Auditorium as well as on the Arts and Sciences building has been held up for about six weeks by the recent unfavorable weather, according to President W. W. Haggard. The delay will postpone formal o p e n i n g of the auditorium until some time in the winter quarter of 1951. It had formerly been expected that the building would be in use in the fall quarter of next year. Dr. Haggard also pointed out that it would take at least a month to complete the organ installation after the building itself is finished. The pipe organ which will be installed in the new auditorium will be one of the type used in the U. S. Naval academy at Annapolis. It is expected to be one of the finest instruments of its kind in the state, Dr. Haggard said. College Choir On 5-day Tour pN.W.Wash. 'Beginning March 5, the WWC choir of sixty-six voices, under the able direction of Bernard Regier, will begin a five-day tour over Northwest Washington. .^Leaving Western Washington Sunday afternoon, the choir will arrive in Seattle, where they will present a half-hour program over radio station , KOMO entitled "Voices of the Northwest." Transportation for the trip will be provided by two chartered Greyhound buses. A request has been hopefully submitted to the North Coast Greyhound company by the choir personnel for the same two drivers as last year. They were most accommodating. The program for Monday will consist of three concerts, these be-in*- at Bothell, Kirkland, and Belle-vue. Tuesday will take in Benton, Kent,' and an evening concert at Seattle's Cornish Conservatory of Music; Wednesday, Hignline and a double assembly at Franklin high school in Seattle will be presented. The choir will conclude their tour Thursday with a double assembly at Roosevelt high school in Seattle and take in Arlington en route* h&he that afternoon. Friday, February 10 1950 'Staircase Next Pic Last week's Sunday movie venture was a heartening success, according to Bob King, member of the Student Facilities committee. An audience of 255 students and students' wives viewed the film. "Spiral Staircase" is planned for Sunday, February 12, according to King. The price will be the same (25 cents) as last week, as will be the time (7:00 p.m.). The Board of Control is considering the showing of football pictures of the Vikings for some future Sunday showing. These will be an added attraction in addition to the regular movie. Writer Staff Needs More Contributions Plans concerning publication of an edition of the Writer, Western literary magazine, will be laid next Wednesday, February 15, Annis Hovde of the English department has announced. The Writer group, which welcomes all newcomers among writing enthusiasts, Mr. Hovde.. further reported, will meet in room 38, at 4:00 p. m. Material is being submitted, the faculty adviser stated, but many more poems, short stories and other forms of creative writing are needed. College Offers Scholarships To Outstanding High School Grads Western Washington college is offering 50 scholarships for 1950 and -1951, it was announced by Dr. Merle Kuder, director of Student Personnel services. Thirty cash awards of #100.00 each are available for prospective elementary teachers. They will be given on a basis of high academic • achievement, a well-founded career plan in elementary teaching, and the possession of personal Equalities required for success in that profession, according to Dr. Four Faculty Attend Meet \ Miss Leona Sundquist, Miss Pearl Merriman, Miss Helen Gillham, and Dr. Irwin A. Hammer will attend a four-day meeting of the National Education association in Denver, Colorado, February 10-14. During the meeting the instructors all from different departments, will meet with groups and hold discussions relating to their fields. The scholarships will go to students who are competent musicians as well as superior scholars. In many instances they are renewed for a second, third, and fourth year. Dr. Kuder pointed out the fact that these scholarships are actually worth a great deal at WWC. The amount is more than sufficient to cover all institutional charges; it leaves a balance sufficient to defray the major share of costs for books and supplies. The money for these... scholarships is provided by alumni and by various service clubs and organizations.
