Students, community members rally to end war By Laura Thoren THE WESTERN FRONT Despite freezing temperatures, nearly 90 people rallied against the war on terrorism, raising $51 for Afghan aid and 85 signatures for an anti-war petition in Red Square Wednesday. The Western Anti-War Movement, a campus organization, organized speakers from Fairhaven College and Bellingham to speak out against the Bush administration's campaign in the Middle East. "The Bush administration seems to be leading this country down a path of endless war with undefined enemies that could last for years," WAM spokeswoman Jean Fallow said. "Attacking these countries doesn't make Americans feel safer." The rally focused on three issues: prevention of future attacks in Iraq, defense of civil liberties of people who have been detained since Sept. 11 and funding of human needs rather Late book request submissions may mean less buyback cash Cahdace Nelson/ The Western Front College Store employee Zeke Spier sorts previous quarter's books to make room for spring books. By Robin Duranleau THE WESTERN FRONT Western students may feel the frustration of receiving less money when selling books back if Western professors do not make their book requests for spring quarter soon. Western Associated Students Bookstore manager Robert Perks said they have received 75 percent of the spring quarter book list. The booklist was due Feb. 1. "The last 25 percent does affect the students," Perks said. College Store manager Tom VanSant said he has received nearly half of the book list for spring quarter. The College Store has only received approximately 1,100 "adoptions," or book requests, when usually 2,100 to 2,300 are submitted per quarter. Texts that have an adoption can receive a refund of up to 50 percent of the original price of the text, VanSant said. VanSant said the College Store has another week to put together their buy-back list. Without a booklist, VanSant said the bookstores do not know which books will be used for classes. VanSant said the bookstore often offers students the lower wholesale price for the book because they do not know which books will be of any value. "Whatever we don't get at buy-back, we have no other choice at this point but to order it new," VanSant said. "Students will be buying new books rather than used ones." The AS Bookstore provides the College Store with Western's book list information. Perks said the amount of adoptions they See BOOKS, Page 4 than military needs, Fallow said "We hope to encourage people to take a public stance to change the catastrophic course our country is going in," Fallow said.
